Nevertheless, because of the populations distaste for the new design, many pieces went into heavy circulation, and examples of higher grade pieces are difficult to obtain. Many numismatists of the time disliked the thin planchet and recessed design, and claims were even made that the indented details would harbor dirt and germs, a claim that has now been proven false. This pattern was the only recessed design used in United States coinage history, however it was met with much skepticism.
